The Sanctum is a 6-episode web series written and produced by Megan J. Wilson, that aired in 2009 to appreciative reviews on youtube and koldcast.tv. It takes a gritty look at superheroes who need some help themselves – specifically with substance abuse. Framed around a weekly Narcotics Anonymous meeting, each installment focuses on a specific character’s story. What happens to a superhero child that flies too far his first time in the skies? What happens when a superhero who zips through his life at supersonic speed is willing to risk it all for a chance at human connection? The answer to both questions is: Nothing good.
In the safety of The Sanctum, people with special powers unveil the personal circumstances that have led them to a life of addiction and loneliness, with the help of MaryLou, a former addict with her own supernatural secrets and her own secret shameful history. Bonded by the anguish of their individual experiences and the often destructive nature of their supernatural abilities, they begin to learn to heal themselves. And all the while, evil lurks in their midst.
